Почему “chicken”?
В английском chicken (курица) ассоциируется с трусостью.
Отсюда:

Excuse me?’ said Ron sharply. ‘What d’you mean, a bit of whoever we’re changing into? I’m drinking nothing with Crabbe’s toenails in it ...’
Hermione continued as though she hadn’t heard him.
‘We don’t have to worry about that yet, though, because we add those bits last ...’
Ron turned, speechless, to Harry, who had another worry.
‘D’you realise how much we’re going to have to steal, Hermione? Shredded skin of Boomslang, that’s definitely not in the students’ cupboard. What’re we going to do, break into Snape’s private stores? I don’t know if this is a good idea ...’
Hermione shut the book with a snap.
‘Well, if you two are going to chicken out, fine,’ she said. There were bright pink patches on her cheeks and her eyes were brighter than usual. ‘I don’t want to break rules, you know. I think threatening Muggle-borns is far worse than brewing up a difficult potion. ...
‘I never thought I’d see the day when you’d be persuading us to break rules,’ said Ron. ‘All right, we’ll do it. But not toenails, OK?

potent — мощный, сильнодействующий, очень эффективный.

Слово potent используют, когда что-то обладает сильным эффектом — физическим, химическим, магическим или даже эмоциональным:

То есть это зелья с очень сильным магическим действием, не для новичков.

‘Oh, Ron, there won’t be anyone in there,’ said Hermione, standing up and coming over. ‘That’s Moaning Myrtle’s place.Come on, let’s have a look.’
And ignoring the large ‘Out of Order’ sign, she opened the door.
It was the gloomiest, most depressing bathroom Harry had ever set foot in. Under a large, cracked and spotted mirror were a row of chipped, stone sinks. The floor was damp and reflected the dull light given off by the stubs of a few candles, burning low in their holders; the wooden doors to the cubicles were flaking and scratched and one of them was dangling off its hinges.
Hermione put her fingers to her lips and set off towards the end cubicle. When she reached it she said, ‘Hello, Myrtle, how are you?’
Harry and Ron went to look. Moaning Myrtle was floating on the cistern of the toilet, picking a spot on her chin.
‘This is a girls’ bathroom,’ she said, eyeing Ron and Harry suspiciously. ‘They’re not girls.’
‘No,’ Hermione agreed. ‘I just wanted to show them how – er – nice it is in here.’
She waved vaguely at the dirty old mirror and the damp floor.
